NC: AIWW Mile 236.0, intersection with Browns Inlet, severe shoaling

September 16, 2012

Want to inform you and our fellow Waterway Guide readers: there is severe shoaling at Brown’s Inlet, NC, on the ICW. We are in a 49’ Grand Banks, hard aground in the middle of the channel. There is a 42’ sailboat in the same condition right behind us.

Cruisers should be aware of this condition. We hit two hours before low tide. Our draft is 4’6”.

Best Regards,

Pat Esgate

Ed note: At our request Pat has provided the additional information below.

Browns inlet, right between Red 60 and Green 61A. Be advised that as of yesterday, the water to the RIGHT of Red 60 was at 10’—passable outside the channel—one sailboat did make it through that route.

NC: Onslow Beach, AIWW mile 240.0, aids to navigation

March 28, 2013

The USACE has moved the buoys at mile 240, north of Onslow Beach Bridge. There are currently three buoys, starting with the green to the south which is currently shown on your chart. Between that marker and the second one, depths drop to approximately 8 feet, and then depths maintain at 9 - 10 feet until past the inlet and final buoy. Maintain a distance of 40 - 50 feet from the markers for best water, proceeding slowly as this inlet is subject to frequent changes. This particularly applies after any strong weather. All depths are at MLW.

NC: AIWW mile 256.0, Stump Sound, missing nav aid and shoaling

March 27, 2013

Cruising the ICW north in North Carolina we found that marker 39 (mile 256) is missing, and the channel seems filled with shoaling, edge to edge. There are numerous red floats, private I expect, and we wove through them at 2 kn finding 5’-6’ depths at near high tide. Previous shoaling at marker 99 (fall 2012) is now no problem, but there are numerous shoals south of 99 for 5 statute miles or so. Through that passage it is broken-field running, as they say! — Keith on LaFamilia, GB42

AIWW mile 460.0, Isle of Palms, shoaling

January 18, 2013

The following is from the CG 7th District NTM 03/13.

Shoaling has been reported in the vicinity of Winyah Bay - Charleston Harbor DBN 117A (LLNR 34510.5) in the ICW. The Army Corp did a survey in November 2012 with depths reading 4.2 - 6.5 in that area. Anything less than mean low water and the channel becomes restricted to most vessels with the exception of small boats. The Army Corp has no future plans for dredging due to budget restrictions. Mariners are advised to usecaution while transiting this area and view the Local Notice to Mariners editions for shoaling information and repositioning of aids to navigation.

Ed Note: This shoaling occurs in the intracoastal at the intersection with Swinton Creek. The CG notice above does a poor job of describing just where the shoaling is.

SC: Isle of Palms, AIWW mile 461.0, shoaling

May 16, 2013

I transited this area today aboard a 105’ motorboat with a 7’ draft at dead low tide. At dead low tide there is NOT 7’ of water along the magenta line. Several attempts of poking my nose around and I finally located the water. Between the 117a and 121 markers pay attention to the shoreline on the west side. Where the shoreline is low and sloping on both sides stay in the middle but where the shoreline gets steep and sharp on the west side, it does the same thing underwater and there is the depth with good water. In summary if you are in the correct spot(not on the magenta line) you’ll find 7.5’ at low tide for several hundred yards on the north and south side and at what I would call the dangerous shoal even more water WAY over on the red side at the shoal. That shoal lies on the south east side of a little creek on the green side. It’s right at where the shoreline is a little steep on the red side. Sounds vague but clear to notice on scene.
